Shubnum Khan's debut novel Onion Tears is a pure delight to read. Set in suburban South Africa, it tells the story of three generations of Muslim women. There is Khadeejah Bibi Ballim, a first generation Indian, her daughter Summaya and Summaya's daughter, eleven-year old Aneesa. Book Review: Shubnum Khan's 'Onion Tears: A Novel' by bookshy - What a lovely debut novel from South African writer, Shubnum Khan. Penguin Books SA sent me a copy for review (thank you!), and I really didn't know what to expect when I started reading it. It turned out to be one of those novels I just couldn't put down.

She has a degree in Media Studies and a Masters degree in English. Her first novel Onion Tears was shortlisted for the Penguin Prize for African Writing and the University of Johannesburg Debut Fiction Prize. Her work has been translated into Italian, Vietnamese, Afrikaans and Norwegian.
